MERCY

Finally, since returning from the Newlands, Mercy sees her chance to do something useful. Because while Sam’s been busy curing the sick, and Hawk and Luca have been building the boat, Mercy’s been…floating. Nothing had made that more obvious than when Kian asked her to go and gather the leaders for the meeting. She’s little more than a messenger.

No good at building. No good at making antidotes. No good at fighting. Not even any good at getting Charity to talk. And everyone knows that talking’s her thing.

But all that’s about to change.

Because Askala has an enemy in its midst. Someone is sabotaging their efforts to protect themselves from the imminent attack. And Mercy is going to find out who it is.

She looks around the crowd gathered on the beach to see the unfurling of the sail. Surely, whoever tore it to shreds has to be here to see the devastated reaction to their handiwork.

The people of Fairbanks stand off to one side. Tarquin is with them, glued to Relic. Those two have become inseparable since the people of Fairbanks arrived. Mercy suspects it’s because Relic understands what it’s like to be an outsider here. Their bond reminds her a little of Hawk and Sam when they were young.

She studies the faces of these new arrivals. The people who gave her shelter in the Outlands and treated her like one of their own.

There’s Annabel but there’s no way she can be a suspect. She wouldn’t hurt a mosquito.

There’s Finn and Dharma—two people who are impossible to put in separate categories given their closeness. But they wouldn’t have done it either. They want a better life for their younger son than the one that was stolen from their first.

She looks at the other Fairbanks faces, lesser known to her but all seeming equally as shocked by what just took place.

No, these are peaceful people. They would never sabotage Askala like that.

Although…the man they call Ghost isn’t technically one of them.

Ghost is standing off to the side of the group. He’s looking at the ground, deep in thought. Mercy can’t tell if his odd behavior is because he’s not used to being around so many people, or if he’s just…suspicious.

Then she remembers how Ghost saved her life by dropping that knife in her lap when Gunner and Vitron held her captive. It can’t be him!

Determined not to let her personal feelings get in the way of this serious investigation, Mercy adds Ghost to her list of suspects. Although, it’s not shaping up to be much of a list so far.

Scanning the crowd, her eyes land on Deniel next. She’s never trusted that guy. His mother was always so busy accusing everyone of everything—especially Jagger—that it makes Mercy wonder if some of Zali’s attitudes rubbed off on her son. Luca had mentioned only last night that Deniel had said some pretty uncomfortable things about Jagger as they’d been working on the boat.

She adds Deniel to her list, deciding he’s definitely worth further investigation.

Which brings her to Jagger.
